You won’t believe how much romance this prequel cranks up — and how many obstacles it throws between the lovers.

A quick refresh: what Blood of My Blood picks up

Outlander’s prequel, Outlander: Blood of My Blood, returns for a second season that doubles down on the show’s hallmark: romance driving the narrative. The new episodes follow two couples separated by time and circumstance. In 18th-century Scotland we find Brian Fraser (Jamie Roy) and Ellen Mackenzie (Harriet Slater), members of rival clans whose fledgling escape and hopes for a new life collide with the Jacobite rising of 1715. In postwar London, Henry Beauchamp (Jeremy Irvine) and his wife Julia (Hermione Corfield) are plunged into the past after encountering the standing stones at Craigh Na Dun, with Julia trapped in the Highlands while Henry is briefly sent back to the 1920s.

How two romances unfold across centuries

Season 2 picks up the lovers’ threads where they were left. Brian and Ellen have avoided a marriage to Malcolm Grant, but that respite is short-lived: Brian feels bound by his commitments to the Jacobite cause while Ellen must return to her family and mend strained ties with her brothers Colum (Séamus McLean Ross) and Dougal (Sam Retford), who resent her refusal of the arranged match. Their relationship, once a private affair, becomes entangled with clan politics and loyalty.

Meanwhile, Henry manages to get back to 1924 after visiting Craigh Na Dun, but Julia remains stuck in the past, confined at Leathers Castle under the control of the increasingly unhinged Lord Lovat (Tony Curran). Lovat is convinced Julia’s child belongs to him and harbors grand ambitions about a future Scottish crown. Back in 1924, Henry’s attempts to explain his wife’s disappearance as time travel fall on skeptical ears, complicating any simple reunion.

The season’s central engine: separation and yearning

Longing and separation are central mechanics of the show. The series repeatedly distances its couples so reunions carry emotional payoff: Henry manages to extract Julia from the past at one point, only for them to be split again almost immediately. Brian and Ellen are on the cusp of building a life together when the Jacobite uprising and clan obligations force difficult choices. For every step forward toward domestic stability, a new setback arrives—war, family expectations, temporal dislocation—yet the constant thread is the characters’ determination to find one another.

New complications that keep the stories fresh

Although the formula of separation and reunion might seem familiar, season 2 alters the stakes and settings enough to avoid simple repetition. Brian and Ellen’s relationship has become more public, prompting grudging acceptance from some relatives: Ellen’s savvy in safeguarding Mackenzie clan finances and Brian’s devotion to the Jacobite cause make the pair tolerated, if not fully embraced. Julia must navigate Lovat’s whims and the arrival of a new maid who has her own agenda, while Henry scrambles to reunite with his wife and find a way back through time.

Romantic certainty versus historical and personal hurdles

One defining choice of Blood of My Blood is that the series never seriously questions whether its couples belong together. The drama arises from external forces—the Jacobite uprising, family politics, kidnappings and the mechanics of time travel—rather than doubts about affection or fidelity. That narrative confidence allows declarations of love, intimate moments, and reunions to carry significant emotional weight, elevating the romantic core above the historical backdrop.

Who stands out on screen and where to watch

All four leads have moments to shine: Jamie Roy and Jeremy Irvine deliver notable turns, but Harriet Slater and Hermione Corfield emerge as central figures, with Slater’s Ellen particularly highlighted for her struggle to maintain autonomy in a restrictive world. The season preserves what made Outlander compelling for many viewers by keeping romance at the center while layering political intrigue and period detail around it.
