You won’t believe which actress actually invented one of Spanish TV’s most quoted lines — and the story behind it is as charming as the show itself.
Why that little phrase stuck with a generation
The sitcom Aquí no hay quien viva still finds millions of viewers each year, and across its five seasons it built a handful of unforgettable moments — including catchphrases that became part of TV folklore. One of the most recognizable is the line often aimed at Lucía (played by María Adánez): “Qué mona va esta chica siempre.” Fans of the series will immediately connect that sentence with Lucía’s character and the comic tone around her appearances.

The creator behind the memorable line
In a recent conversation on Cadena Ser, María Adánez revealed that the credit for the phrase doesn’t belong to the scriptwriters alone: it was born from the improvisational wit of Mariví Bilbao. Adánez described Mariví as a remarkable, free-spirited woman, rich in stories and theatrical experience, who would frequently invent bits of dialogue. She recalled how Mariví would spin wild anecdotes — once telling her about divorcing and living in a tiny Seat 600 parked on a street in Bilbao — and that sort of life-filled storytelling often fed into the show’s spontaneous moments.

How an offhand line became part of the series
According to Adánez, one day Mariví delivered the line as she entered a scene: she said, “Qué mona va esta chica siempre.” The reaction from the cast — including Alberto and Laura — was immediate and enthusiastic. The joke landed so well on set that the phrase was kept and folded into the series, later celebrated by viewers and becoming one of the program’s trademark bits of dialogue.
María Adánez’s clear acknowledgment
Adánez is unambiguous about authorship: “The phrase is hers,” she said, making a point of giving Mariví Bilbao credit both inside and outside the show. She emphasized how much she enjoyed sharing meals and conversation with Mariví and other colleagues like Penella and Gemma, three very different women whose personalities and stories enriched the production and, in Mariví’s case, contributed lines that have lived on in popular memory.
