Paramount+ Drops Frasier Revival, but There’s Still Hope as CBS Studios Seeks New Home for the Show
If you were born before May 13, 2004, here’s an interesting fact: you’ve now lived longer than the television series Frasier not once, but twice. According to a report by Deadline, the revival of the beloved NBC sitcom at Paramount+ has been axed after its second season. Remarkably, the new iteration managed to go through its entire run without ever bringing David Hyde Pierce back as the iconic Niles.
The recent version of Frasier wasn’t shy about bringing back familiar faces, with standout episodes from the first season featuring Peri Gilpin and the esteemed Bebe Neuwirth. The show, crafted by Chris Harris and Joe Cristalli, also introduced a new set of characters who seemed to mirror the original Seattle crew in many ways. Furthermore, the series attempted to echo the father-son relationship from the original show by pairing Dr. Crane with his son Frederick (played by Jack Cutmore-Scott), a Boston firefighter who tries hard to keep his inherent snobbishness at bay.
Truth be told, the revival wasn’t terrible—it occasionally slipped into generic sitcom territory, but Kelsey Grammer retained his flair for portraying the fundamentally pretentious Dr. Crane. While it never reached the comedic heights of the original, it managed to deliver a few good laughs here and there. However, despite being a massive fan of the original Frasier, even I didn’t feel compelled to watch the second season, which likely didn’t help its chances of survival. Nonetheless, CBS Studios isn’t ready to give up on the series just yet. They believe the show still has potential and are looking to find it a new platform, indicating that Paramount+ might not have been the best fit. This service seems to favor shows like Star Trek or those produced by Taylor Sheridan, leaving little room for a sitcom like Frasier. Hence, if the show does make a comeback, it will probably be through another streaming service that has a better grasp on sitcoms.
