Peacock Revives Texas Football Drama in New ‘Friday Night Lights’ Series
With a motto of “Clear heads, old ideas, can’t lose,” Deadline announced today that the much-discussed revival of the iconic series Friday Night Lights is set to premiere on Peacock. Helmed by Jason Katims, the original showrunner, and produced by Peter Berg, the filmmaker behind the Lights movie and original series creator, the reboot features a plot that’s every bit as scrappy and dramatic as its predecessor: “In the aftermath of a catastrophic hurricane, a disheveled high school football team and their interim coach, struggling with personal setbacks, strive for the Texas High School State Championship, becoming a symbol of hope for their community.”
This fresh take on Friday Night Lights seems to carve out a new niche in the Texas Football Cinematic Universe, rather than catching up with the Taylors, whose story concluded with the series’ end in 2011. Although Peter Berg once toyed with the idea of a follow-up movie shortly after the series concluded, he shelved the project in 2013. Still, don’t discount the occasional guest appearance; even the cast of Suits found themselves back on set after thinking they were done for good.
The original Friday Night Lights enjoyed a five-season run, with the first two seasons broadcast on NBC and the remaining three relegated to DirecTV’s now-defunct 101 Network. Despite its consistent struggle with ratings, the series has maintained a strong presence on streaming platforms, justifying the decision to reboot a show that traditionally underperformed in live viewership.
