Matthew Gray Gubler Set to Make a One-Episode Comeback in the Criminal Minds Revival

Now in its third season on Paramount+, the revamped Criminal Minds: Evolution has finally secured Matthew Gray Gubler for a guest appearance. Gubler, who was a staple throughout the original series as the endearing criminal profiler Spencer Reid, had been the only key cast member from the show’s last lineup who hadn’t yet returned in the revival, reportedly due to conflicting schedules. (Previously, Gubler had the unique distinction of being featured in every season of the original series.)

It seems these scheduling conflicts have been sorted out, as Deadline recently announced that Gubler is set to appear in part of an episode for the show’s upcoming third season. (This might remind some of Kim Cattrall’s minimal involvement in And Just Like That…, but let’s reserve judgment until we see the episode.) In the storyline of the revival, Reid has been off on a “special assignment,” which accounts for his absence, leaving characters played by Joe Mantegna and Paget Brewster to tackle the relentless surge of serial killers without him.

As for Gubler’s other commitments, we have some insight: He has been busy with a new TV procedural titled Einstein, created by the minds behind Monk. This project only came to our attention when it was highlighted this past October, and frankly, it’s a compelling premise. Imagine this: “The great-grandson of Albert Einstein, played by Gubler, is a gifted but unfocused professor whose reckless behavior eventually lands him in hot water. To avoid serious consequences, he starts assisting a local police detective to solve complex cases.” The concept itself is intriguing—much like when CBS teased about a legal show featuring a grown-up Tom Sawyer, which, sadly, never materialized into a series.

The second season of Criminal Minds: Evolution concluded in August, and while the third season is expected, it likely won’t premiere until around 2025.
