Get ready for a blast from the past with a twist! The iconic ’90s sitcom “Family Matters” is set to make a surprising comeback, but not in the way you might expect. Bryton James, famed for his role as little Richie, spilled the beans in a recent chat with Entertainment Weekly, revealing plans that are stirring up excitement and nostalgia among fans of the classic show.

Reviving the Winslow Family with a Modern Twist

In an intriguing turn of events, instead of the typical reboot featuring new actors and extravagant productions, James has proposed an animated series revival. This innovative approach plans to bring back the original cast members to voice their beloved characters, although sadly, Michelle Thomas and Rosetta LeNoire, who have passed away, won’t be part of this new project. The actor envisions a reimagining of the Winslow family’s comedic escapades, updated for today’s audience. The idea is to take the original episodes, modernize them, and essentially start from scratch to appeal to the new generation.

Challenges and Breakthroughs

The journey to make this animated revival a reality hasn’t been without its challenges. James faced the daunting task of finding a production company willing to finance the project and convincing the original cast members to return. Impressively, he managed to overcome these hurdles, even persuading the initially reluctant Jaleel White—known for his iconic role as Steve Urkel—who had previously dismissed the idea of rebooting “Family Matters” as recently as last year.

The Benefits of Going Animated

James believes that transitioning from a live-action format to an animated series offers significant advantages. For one, it eliminates the need for the cast to be physically present in the same location, which facilitates the participation of all original actors. Moreover, it avoids the need for actors like Jaleel White to don their old costumes while still delivering the essence of what made the show special to audiences and families, making it relevant for today’s viewers.

This animated reboot concept is reminiscent of another project involving “Smallville” stars Michael Rosenbaum and Tom Welling, who have been working on an animated continuation of the series about the young Superman. Although currently stalled, this project similarly captured the attention of fans, indicating a growing interest in animated revivals of beloved series.

James concluded, “It’s in the hands of Warner Bros now,” expressing hope and determination to see the project through. This proposed animated revival of “Family Matters” promises to offer a fresh and modern take on the Winslow family’s adventures while honoring the original series’ legacy.
