My most recent hunt for rental apartment search was a great lesson in patience. I started looking two months in advance, called up many brokers/property owners.  I found a place in Mumbai, paid a security deposit advance, and then waited for the rental agreement… and waited… and waited. It never happened.

Two weeks later, the broker finally replied to about 20 calls, emails, and texts with, “They decided to rent the property to someone who has a family and not for bachelors like me.” No other explanation. Luckily, I managed to get the deposit back.

So I had to start all over again,i found myself in the same loop calling brokers who i had no clue who to trust, Then i tried to talk to owners directly. This time, I asked some friends for help. One knew a property owner who was able to get me in to see a place right away.  I liked the place, the landlord was fine, and all looked good to go. Until it wasn’t, The deal fell through, and I lost yet another flat!

At this point one thing was very clear to me that I didn’t want to pay a hefty brokerage by going through brokers, nor the owners directly since I knew there would be trouble negotiating so many things with owners directly in terms of hike in the rent for coming years, property maintenance & many ad hoc issues.
