Is it Time to Revisit Mindhunter? Holt McCallany Hints at a Possible Movie Trilogy.
It’s been six years since director David Fincher seemingly hung up his hat on Mindhunter, but according to series star Holt McCallany, there’s a chance the psychological thriller could make a comeback in the form of three movies. After wrapping up with a suspense-filled ending to the Atlanta Child Murders and an intense dynamic between Detective Holden Ford and the chilling serial killer Ed Kemper—not to mention the looming threat of BTK—fans were left wanting more. While Fincher has stayed busy with Netflix, working on projects like Mank and The Killer, and rumoured to be involved in a sequel to Quentin Tarantino’s Once Upon A Time… In Hollywood, the lack of a third season, as well as a 4K Blu-ray release of his Netflix films, has been a sore spot. However, McCallany suggests the hunt might not be over just yet.
In a recent interview with CBR, McCallany shared that Fincher approached him a few months back with the idea that Mindhunter could return as a series of three two-hour films. He cautiously noted, “There is a chance it may come back as three two-hour movies.” But he also set realistic expectations by adding, “But I think it’s just a chance.” He revealed that although writers are currently working on potential scripts, everything hinges on Fincher’s approval.
The idea of continuing Mindhunter excites many, but the emphasis remains on crafting quality scripts. According to Variety, the production of the second season faced significant hurdles—Fincher dismissed the original showrunner, scrapped the initial script and series bible, and relocated to Pittsburgh to personally oversee the filming. Reflecting on the challenges, Fincher had expressed his reluctance: “I’ll admit I was a little bit like ‘I don’t know that I’m ready to spend another two years in the crawl space.’” Whether he decides to return to that ‘crawl space’ will significantly impact the potential revival.
