Conditioner sanitization: that’s why you should clean it right away

Air conditioner sanitization : air conditioner sanitization is a procedure to be carried out periodically throughout the year.

Depending on the use of the system, obviously the frequency of intervention changes.

In systems used only for cooling (the so-called air conditioning ), sanitize first of all twice a year.

The first time must be done in May, before starting the car for the summer season.

The second time must be done in October, before the autumn winter break.

In the middle, cleaning interventions must be carried out according to the use made of the system.

If the machine is also used for heating in the autumn-winter period, cleaning must also be done in this period.

Conditioner sanitization, why carry it out?

In this particular historical period, a correct air conditioner sanitization is even more necessary.

It is not scientifically proven that air conditioning systems can spread Corona virus indoors.

If you are in an environment in the presence of a person affected by COVID-19 , the breath (hot or cold that is) could push the particles even beyond the fateful meter away.

However, in the absence of Corona virus in an enclosed environment, it is unlikely that it will enter from the outside via the air conditioner.

In any case, beyond COVID-19, it is good to periodically sanitize the air conditioner.

Furthermore, a correct sanitization of the air conditioner and cleaning of the systems will allow optimal operation and avoid energy waste.

This is to ensure cleaner air in the rooms and to remove risks such as the legionella bacterium.

Legionella risk, a very dangerous bacterium

But let’s get to the core of our article. The most important reason to keep our air conditioner clean is to avoid the proliferation of a tiny enemy who loves air conditioning pipes and appliances: Legionella pneumophila .

It can survive up to 55 degrees and in aquatic environments.

Pipes, swimming pools or water tanks are just some of the ideal habitats of Legionella.

Transmission occurs only by air and causes pneumonia which, if not promptly treated, can even lead to death .

It mainly causes gastrointestinal pain, muscle aches and loss of appetite.

Therefore, the importance of keeping the hygiene of household appliances under control for climate control should not be underestimated.

Air conditioning sanitization, how to do it

The sanitization of the air conditioner and the cleaning of a domestic system can be carried out independently or with the help of a specialized technician.

Also it must be remembered that an air conditioner has an indoor unit and an outdoor unit.

Let’s start by talking about the indoor unit.

Cleaning indoor unit, filters

The first thing to do is to clean the filters.

Perform this operation after disconnecting the power to the machine and after removing the front panel of our indoor unit.

Depending on the use made of the air conditioner, it could happen to find the filters particularly clogged with dust or other material.

Therefore, it is advisable to wear gloves and a mask if you are allergic.

At this point, obviously rely on the instruction manual: then proceed with removing the filter grille.

If the filters are heavily clogged with dust , an initial cleaning operation can be carried out using a brush .

After having removed the “bulky” part of the dirt, cleaning can be carried out.

If the filter can be immersed in water (check the instruction manual) prepare a basin with warm water and neutral soap.

Gently clean the parts of the filter even if the dirt is persistent, to avoid causing damage.

Eventually, once this operation is closed, you can also apply antibacterial liquid, in order to better protect allergy sufferers.

You can also choose, during the cleaning phase, whether to use a degreasing spray or not.

ATTENTION: the filter must then dry in the open air – or in any case in a ventilated place – but not in sunlight.

After the drying phase, reassemble all parts following the instructions.

If we have done this correctly, we will notice an improvement in the use of the air conditioner.

If, on the other hand, anomalies are noted, it is advisable to contact qualified personnel .

A more specific intervention may be required, such as replacing the filter (perhaps too old) or refilling the gas.

Cleaning indoor unit, dispensers

Like the previous operation, also in this case first turn off the machine.

Before reassembling the filters, following the instructions, access the exchange coil and spray a special cleaning product .

Use a cloth to remove the dirt and reassemble the filters.

Then turn on the air conditioner, so that the product spreads completely by sanitizing the machine.

As previously mentioned, if anomalies are noted, it is advisable to contact specialized technicians.

Outdoor unit cleaning

Always after disconnecting the power supply, check for the presence of external bodies (leaves, twigs, etc.) and remove them.

Then, gently wipe the parts with a cloth.

To protect the outside during the period of non-use, you can think of a cover sheet.

Portable air conditioner: how to clean it

Portable air conditioners are also very popular . Also in this case their cleaning and maintenance is important.

Clean the cabinet and front panel with a damp cloth and warm water with dish soap.

The filters can be cleaned with a vacuum cleaner or washed with hot water and a cleaning liquid.

They must dry properly before reassembly.

Periodically empty the condensate tray.

Air conditioner cleaning: call the technician?

For the domestic air conditioner you can choose to call the technician or not.

However, even if not mandatory, we can decide to contact a specialized technician for cleaning and sanitizing our air conditioner.

In any case, if you notice any anomalies, contact a specialized technician immediately.
