While to most people a roof is going to be a roof, there is actually a difference between that of a residential roof and a commercial roof.  While it is true that any type of damage to either of these roofs can be potentially expensive and even result in loss of value from the property, both are also going to require the best quality materials and the proper installation of those materials by some type of roofing professional.

However, any roofing professional will be able to tell you that the two types of roofs are anything but created equally.  Because of this it is going to be imperative that you know the differences between the two, meaning that these differences are going to be key in finding the correct roofing system for each of the types of structures.  Here is how a residential roof compares to a commercial roof.

The Roofing Materials

When it comes to the materials that are more commonly used for both residential and commercial roofs, they will tend to vary depending upon the kind of roof, the cost, and even the weather conditions.  Typically, a commercial roof is going to have a flat slope, while a residential roof is going to tend to be much steeper.

With that being said, it normally takes a very qualified roofing professional to be able to meet the demands that these two different styles of roofs require, as well as explaining the best materials to get the roofing job done right.  This is why those who are skilled in roofing are going to be in much higher demand than those who are not as knowledgeable or experienced.  Some of the materials that are more commonly used in both residential and commercial roofing projects include:

  • Slate, ceramic shingles, asphalt, and tile
  • Metal roofing
  • Wood shakes
  • Built-up roof
  • Solar shingles

The Design of the Roof

When it comes to residential and commercial roofing, they are going to vary greatly in their design.  While a commercial roof is going to tend to have a much lower slope or be completely flat, a residential roof is going to typically have many more slopes and steeper angles.  This is because flat roofs are going to require much more maintenance and even involve larger repairs of bigger roofing spaces, as there will be spaces that are installed in sections.

Also, the regular design of a commercial roof is going to need to include the amount of weight that it will need to sustain by equipment that will be on it, as well as the need to cover a much larger area.  When it comes to residential homes though, they are normally going to have much less that they will need to worry about as far as the design of the roof goes, meaning that it will be much easier to maintain, replace and repair if required.

When it comes to commercial roofing and residential roofing, while they both serve the same purpose, they are going to be two completely different things and will need to be addressed as such when repairs are required.
