It’s somewhat baffling to see a 2016-style feminist and a 2001 blackface participant hanging out in 2025, but here we are…
Barely a month has passed since the news broke that Katy Perry and Orlando Bloom had called off their engagement, and it seems Perry has quickly moved on, rocketing into a new relationship at a pace that could rival a Blue Origin space launch. True to her reputation as a beacon of 2015-era feminism, Perry’s new companion is none other than a poster child for 2015-era neoliberal politics!
This past Monday, Perry was seen with the former Canadian Prime Minister, Justin Trudeau, taking a leisurely stroll in Montreal’s Mount Royal Park. Eyewitnesses told TMZ that they looked just like any other couple enjoying a casual walk. We all know that adults of different genders can indeed be just friends who enjoy walks together, but there’s a bit more brewing here.
Late reports indicate that Trudeau was seen walking Perry back to her hotel—the Ritz-Carlton, naturally—and later that day, they met up again, this time in different attire! Their evening concluded with a meal at the upscale Le Violon. Eyewitnesses claim they indulged in several cocktails and dishes, including lobster, and even made a point to thank the kitchen staff personally. While this might sound rather intimate, Danny Smiles, co-owner and chef at Le Violon, told TMZ there was no public display of affection between them and he sensed no romantic vibes. Still, I wouldn’t be surprised if they turned into regulars at his restaurant.
The idea of these two as a couple does strike me as a bit odd. Perry has a history with questionable politicians, and Trudeau has his own controversial past including a blackface incident. Maybe their connection is just about reminiscing over their peaks around 2013?
Perry has had a tough summer, dealing with her breakup from Bloom, promoting a less-than-successful album during a less-than-stellar tour, and fending off rumors that her failed space mission contributed to her failed relationship. Meanwhile, Trudeau, who has been single since his 2023 divorce, stepped down from his political duties in January, officially leaving office in March with a promise to give the country “a real choice in the next election.”
Considering the current chilly relations between Canadians and Americans, this unexpected pairing might not do much to warm things up. But if anyone is skilled at navigating through superficial political gestures, it’s Perry. Will she dedicate “Roar” to peace during her concert tonight in Ontario, or will she opt for another symbolic daisy display? Either way, I’ll be keeping an eye out for Trudeau in the VIP section.
