Exciting times in the world of streaming as the Spanish thriller ‘Ángela’ takes over Netflix, dethroning the long-reigned ‘El juego del calamar’ in Spain. This series, featuring Verónica Sánchez and Daniel Grao, delves into the life of a seemingly happy married woman living a hidden nightmare of abuse. The plot thickens when an old high school crush reenters her life, stirring deep-seated emotions and setting off a chain of dramatic events.

From National TV to Global Sensation

Originally aired on Antena 3 on March 6, 2025, and previously released on Atresplayer in 2024, ‘Ángela’ didn’t initially make a huge splash in its home country. The first episode barely crossed a million viewers, with an average share of 9.45% per episode, falling below the channel’s usual ratings. However, the series found a second wind and an unexpected rise to fame once it hit Netflix on July 4. Within just two days, it climbed to the top of the charts in Spain.

Conquering Netflix Internationally

‘Ángela’s appeal isn’t confined to Spain. The show has spread its wings across Netflix platforms in 18 Latin American countries. In eight of these countries, it has reached the number one spot, while in the remaining ten, it has peaked at the second place so far. This international success suggests a wider audience for ‘Ángela’ than initially anticipated, which is quite reasonable considering the show is a remake of an Australian miniseries titled ‘Angela Black.’ The original series lasted only one season, but given Netflix’s history of extending shows like ‘La Casa de Papel,’ the future of ‘Ángela’ may hold more surprises.

This shift in viewer preference highlights the unpredictable nature of streaming platform successes and the global audience’s growing appetite for diverse, international content. As ‘Ángela’ continues to captivate viewers around the world, it serves as a testament to the universal appeal of compelling storytelling and nuanced character development, transcending cultural and geographic boundaries.
