Are you noticing more Spanish shows on your streaming service lately? You’re not imagining it! The rise of global streaming has indeed increased the production and release of Spanish series, which are carving out a significant niche in a market traditionally dominated by the United States. However, European productions still hold a strong presence in our favorite streaming platforms’ catalogs, often sneaking into the top 10 lists.
The Power of Local Content
In Spain, national content is more watched on streaming platforms than anywhere else in Europe, accounting for 19% of total consumption compared to 8% of local content in other countries. This is notable in an area primarily dominated by a staggering 52% of American productions. The success of Spanish content is not just confined within its borders; it also enjoys a robust export market, particularly in Latin America.
The European Media Industry Outlook report by the European Commission sheds light on this trend. Despite the availability of European Union countries’ productions making up 20% of all titles on streaming platforms, viewers dedicate only 16% of their viewing time to these European entries. This disparity highlights the challenges that European productions face in a competitive industry.
Trending Now: European Hits in Streaming
Focusing on 2024, the list of the most-watched European series on SVOD platforms shows a notable presence. ‘Berlín,’ a Spanish production and a prequel to ‘La Casa de Papel,’ leads as the highest-ranking European series at number 6 globally. Following are other Spanish hits like ‘El caso Asunta,’ ‘Ni una más,’ and ‘Entrevías’ Season 3, showing the diverse range of popular content coming from Spain.
French and German productions also make the list, with ‘Antracita’ from France and ‘Maxton Hall. Un mundo entre nosotros’ Season 1 from Germany, indicating that the appeal of European series is broadening.
European Cinema’s Steady Climb
In the realm of film, European productions also make a mark in the top streaming charts, although they are not as dominant as U.S. productions. Among the top European films on streaming platforms, ‘La sociedad de la nieve’ and ‘En las profundidades del Sena’ from France find spots in the top 10, with Netflix being a common platform for these films.
The list of the most-viewed European films is more distributed compared to series, with five of the twelve top films being Spanish productions or co-productions. This includes diverse entries like ‘El abismo de Kiruna,’ a collaborative effort involving Spain, Sweden, Finland, and Belgium, showcasing the cooperative nature of European filmmaking and its growing influence in the streaming world.
This data demonstrates that while U.S. content still leads, European productions, especially from Spain, are quickly becoming favorites among viewers worldwide, driven by quality storytelling and unique cultural perspectives.
