Imagine a train that not only offers a breath of fresh air to rural transportation but does so at half the cost and double the efficiency of existing models. Meet TELLi, the innovative light rail concept by SNCF that’s turning heads with its ground-breaking features and promise of revitalizing lesser-used lines.
The Dawn of an Economical and Eco-Friendly Rail Solution
SNCF has introduced TELLi, a pioneering light train designed to transform rural mobility in France. This new model stands out by being lighter and less expensive than its predecessors. It utilizes a hybrid battery-pantograph system, capable of carrying 150 passengers over 200 kilometers. This innovation is not just a technical achievement; it’s a potential game-changer for the regions discussing its adoption, with hopes set on a rollout by 2030.
Revolutionizing Rail Technology with TELLi
Jacques Berling, the project lead for TELLi at SNCF, shared insights into the technological advancements underpinning this new train. TELLi combines a 50-ton electric framework with 6 tons of lithium-iron-phosphate batteries, while retaining a pantograph to collect overhead electric current. This dual-system allows for an impressive 200 kilometers of range, a significant leap from the 80 kilometers that current battery-operated trains offer.
This train is not only about capacity but also versatility. With options for 1,500 volts, 25,000 volts, and even a hydrogen version, TELLi is prepared to meet various regional needs. Its onboard features accommodate 150 passengers, 74 seated, and space for four bicycles, making it not just a viable alternative to cars, but a superior choice in terms of capacity and environmental impact.
A Leap Towards Sustainable and Extended Mobility
The extended range of TELLi is strategically planned. It can travel from major electrified stations like Limoges to non-electrified lines and back, all on a single charge. This capability is particularly advantageous for round trips without the need for mid-journey recharging. Berling also mentioned that in flat terrain conditions, TELLi might exceed its 200 kilometers range early in its operational cycle, further enhancing its efficiency.
Recharging TELLi varies by voltage—30 minutes for the 25,000 volts version due to its four battery blocks, while more than an hour is needed for the 1,500 volts version with five blocks. The innovative axle technology by Texelis, featuring two independent motors per wheel, allows active steering in curves, reducing wear on both wheels and rails. Additionally, energy recuperation systems during braking contribute to the train’s autonomy, crucial for routes with frequent stops.
The Cost-Effective Argument for Local Governments
SNCF has positioned TELLi not only as a technical marvel but also as an economically viable option for local administrations. The project, which culminated in a detailed prototype by the end of 2024, showcases around a hundred innovations. Testing is already underway with a sensor-equipped version of the X73500 model train around Limoges.
Regions like Nouvelle-Aquitaine, Occitanie, and Centre-Val de Loire are eyeing this technology, especially as they look to replace diesel trains by 2030. TELLi’s promise of reducing travel intervals dramatically—from two hours to as little as fifteen minutes—is particularly appealing. Moreover, its cost, half that of current catalog trains, combined with a lifespan of 30-40 years and a carbon footprint 20 times less than that of buses, makes TELLi a compelling proposition.
SNCF now awaits regional orders, hoping that the combination of TELLi’s economic and environmental benefits will be enough to prompt the purchase of the 100 to 200 units needed to kickstart this industrial revolution on tracks.
