Idris Elba Set to Reprise His Role in a New Netflix Film as the Iconic Detective.
While the U.S. often hopes for “six seasons and a movie” — a dream that doesn’t always come to fruition even when it’s been officially announced — the UK seems to follow a more generous “five seasons and several movies until we’re done” approach. With Downton Abbey reportedly ending for good, another much-loved British series is making a return: Luther.
As reported by The Hollywood Reporter, the enigmatic series featuring Idris Elba as the eponymous detective has been approved for a second film. This decision follows the 2023 release of Luther: Fallen Sun, which, according to A.V. Club critic Murtada Elfadl, attempted to broaden its appeal, thereby watering down the intense essence that made Luther so riveting on TV. Elfadl noted that while the film functions well independently, newcomers might wonder why there was such a buzz around the original series.
Fallen Sun omitted the character many fans adored—Alice Morgan (played by Ruth Wilson), a psychopathic criminal intricately linked to Luther both professionally and romantically. Fortunately for those fans, Wilson is set to return in the new movie, along with Dermot Crowley as Superintendent Schenk, director Jamie Payne, and series creator and writer Neil Cross.
The upcoming Netflix movie will plunge into a series of brutal and seemingly random murders in London, with Luther being covertly summoned back to duty, according to a synopsis from THR. The central question posed is, “How can Luther save London when it seems like everyone, from every side, wants him dead?”
In a recent statement, Payne, who also directed episodes of the original show, lauded Cross for crafting a “wonderfully dark tale that reunites the team.” Cross, in his statement, expressed a deep connection to the characters, saying, “Luther, Alice, and Schenk are more than just characters to me—they are like family. I constantly find myself wondering where they might be, what they are up to, and what new terrors lurk in London’s shadows when Luther is away. So, we decided to come back and see what new adventures await them.”
