What’s New 

The New Years (MUBI, Wednesday, 12 a.m., series debut)

Fans of Netflix’s One Day should check out this romantic series by director Rodrigo Sorogoyen (The Beasts). It tracks the ups and downs of Ana and Óscar (Iria del Río and Francesco Carril) across 10 New Year’s Eve celebrations. Expect The A.V. Club‘s review on Wednesday. 

The Abandons (Netflix, Thursday, 3 a.m., series debut)

Sons Of Anarchy creator Kurt Sutter presents this high-octane Western featuringThe X-FilesGillian Anderson and Games Of Thrones’ Lena Headey as foes in the 1850s. The cast also includes Lucas Till, Aisling Franciosi, Nick Robinson, and Patton Oswalt. Look for The A.V. Club‘s review on Thursday. 

It’s Never Over, Jeff Buckley (HBO, Thursday, 9 p.m.)

This documentary, part of HBO’s Music Box series and directed by Amy Berg, explores the mysterious life of Jeff Buckley, known for his 1994 album Grace and his iconic rendition of Leonard Cohen’s “Hallelujah.” Featuring insights from close associates like Rebecca Moore, Ben Harper, and Aimee Mann, the film delves into Buckley’s life and untimely death by drowning in 1997 at the age of thirty.

Spartacus: House Of Ashur (Starz, Friday, 12 a.m., series debut)

The Spartacus legacy continues on Starz, a decade and a half since the original series premiered. This sequel focuses on Ashur (Nick E. Tremblay)—who, contrary to previous events, survived—as he rises to lead the gladiator school that once enslaved him, navigating through the brutal Roman political landscape. Expect appearances by Lucy Lawless’ Lucretia and Liam McIntyre’s Spartacus.

Jay Kelly (Netflix, Friday, 3 a.m.)

George Clooney stars in this meta dramedy by Noah Baumbach, playing Jay Kelly, a renowned, aging actor. Kelly ponders his career highs and personal lows while touring Europe with his loyal manager Ron (Adam Sandler). Don’t miss The A.V. Club‘s review.
