Barrymore’s Enthusiastic Support for Colbert Echoes Past TV Moments, Minus the Flash.

One of the most unforgettable scenes in late-night TV took place in 1995 when a youthful Drew Barrymore, during an appearance on David Letterman’s show, excitedly asked Paul Shaffer to play some blues. She then climbed onto Letterman’s desk, danced, and flashed her breasts at him, finishing with a peck on his cheek for his birthday. Decades later, Barrymore, now a host of her own daytime talk show under CBS, revisited the Ed Sullivan Theater to appear on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert during its final season. “I’m just a bit offended you’ve never climbed on the desk for me,” Colbert teased. “Should I dance for you?” Barrymore playfully responded.

Colbert, however, quickly retreated from his jest. “Just kidding, really. Maybe next time,” he said, trying to dissuade her from rising from her seat. Undeterred, Barrymore took off her jacket, revealing a “WE [heart] STEPHEN” shirt, and hopped onto the desk. Though the display was more modest—“Times have changed!” she declared while maneuvering around the desk in her pencil skirt—Barrymore managed to strike some playful burlesque-style poses, causing a sheepish Colbert to chuckle.

Support for Colbert as The Late Show nears its conclusion isn’t limited to Barrymore. Elsewhere in Los Angeles, fellow talk show host Jimmy Kimmel sponsored an Emmys “For Your Consideration” billboard, openly endorsing Colbert with the message, “I’m voting for Stephen.” This display of solidarity comes from genuine admiration. “It’s a significant year for Stephen to win,” explained Molly McNearney, Kimmel’s wife and showrunner, to Gold Derby. “The contributions of Stephen and his team are crucial, and their absence will surely be felt.” Recently, John Oliver also made a guest appearance, marking his record-setting frequency on Colbert’s version of the show. The two hosts raised their glasses “to late night shows, while they last.”

During his visit, Oliver shared his affection for Bravo’s Real Housewives Of Salt Lake City. “CBS might not be thrilled,” he quipped, then gestured towards Colbert and hinted at the network’s controversial decision which, according to a tongue-in-cheek Oliver, seemed like a political maneuver to appease a certain high-profile figure. Both hosts then shrugged off the comment with a toast, signaling more expressions of both fondness and frustration aimed at CBS as The Late Show wraps up its final season.
