Are you tired of the same old mapping apps that track your every move? Say hello to CoMaps, the open-source navigation solution that just got a major upgrade, making it a perfect alternative to Google Maps for those who value their privacy!
What’s New in CoMaps?
In the latest update, CoMaps has rolled out a series of enhancements that have significantly improved the user experience. The update isn’t just about fixing bugs; it’s an overhaul that introduces a new logo and incorporates the latest OpenStreetMaps data as of July 13. Users will notice more precise contour lines on the maps, enhanced classification of wetlands by type, updated vegetation colors, and a revamped appearance of rivers. Additionally, Panoramax images links are now included for points of interests, and various places of worship have been added to the maps.
The update also brings new icons for different amenities such as sports centers, mailboxes, transport services, and more. Maps now feature colorful fillings for pedestrian zones, sidewalks, markets, fitness stations, dog parks, gas stations, and rest areas, enhancing visual navigation cues.
Enhanced Mobile Experience
CoMaps isn’t just about looking good. The update has significantly improved functionality across both Android and iOS platforms. For Android users, there are additional icons, and updates to point of interest details now include opening hours. The app also refreshes the average speed during navigation based on the user’s location and introduces a “Retry” button for failed map downloads.
iOS users are not left behind in this update. Along with new icons and colors, a new feature allows users to stop a track recording without having to save it. The “Settings,” “Help,” and “About” menus have been modernized for better user interaction. Users can now choose a light or dark theme for the map independently of the interface’s global settings, edit bookmarks more quickly, and reassign the main left button.
Localization and Accessibility Improvements
CoMaps has updated translations and voice instructions to cater to a wider audience, including enhanced search capabilities in Arabic. Address ranges have also been reformatted for clarity, now displayed as “123:456” instead of the previous “123 – 456.”
All these exciting new features and improvements will soon be available for download on the Google Play Store, the App Store, and F-Droid. Get ready to experience a privacy-respecting, feature-rich navigation tool that keeps getting better!
