The Delightful Chaos of Paddy’s Pub Crew at School in a Crossover Episode.
When Abbott Elementary met It’s Always Sunny In Philadelphia, it was bound to produce memorable moments. Among them, the dedicated kindergarten teacher Barbara Howard (Sheryl Lee Ralph) finally teaching the perpetually clueless Charlie Kelly (Charlie Day) to read. In a heartwarming scene, Barbara helps Charlie stumble through a bird book, culminating in a celebratory “Move Up Day” ceremony with Melissa (Lisa Ann Walter) and Jacob (Chris Perfetti) applauding from the sidelines. This touching scene is a stark contrast to the usual mayhem of It’s Always Sunny, yet it fits perfectly within the Abbott narrative.
The episode titled “Volunteers,” which marks the midseason return of Abbott’s fourth season, cleverly balances the innocence of the ABC comedy with the wild antics of the FXX series. Charlie’s breakthrough in reading is humorously juxtaposed with Mac’s (Rob McElhenney) disapproving glances. Meanwhile, Dee (Kaitlin Olson) tries to charm Gregory (Tyler James Williams), and Frank (Danny DeVito) engages in a hilarious showdown with Mr. Johnson (William Stanford Davis) about pest control. Surprisingly, the Paddy’s Pub crew fits quite seamlessly into the school setting, creating a memorable and entertaining scenario.
Indeed, “Volunteers” stands as an exemplary TV crossover. The notorious Philly gang ends up doing community service at a struggling West Philly school, an event that also nods to the fact that both shows are under the Disney umbrella. Even for those new to It’s Always Sunny, the episode remains enjoyable, featuring moments like DeVito humorously trapping himself in a cage. The gang quickly adapts to the mockumentary format, although Dennis (Glenn Howerton) conspicuously dodges the camera, marking the episode’s only shortcoming.
While TV crossovers can sometimes feel forced or unrealistic, like the unsuccessful Sleepy Hollow/Bones crossover or the random appearance of Steve Urkel on Full House, there are successful ones like The Simpsons/Family Guy and How To Get Away With Murder meeting Scandal. Fortunately, this Abbott episode belongs to the latter category, with a well-executed plot that highlights the best of both shows.
Dee’s relentless pursuit of Gregory, even after discovering he’s involved with her friend Janine (Quinta Brunson), adds a comedic twist, triggering an unexpected reaction from Janine. This subplot cleverly sets the stage for future romantic developments between Janine and Gregory, delighting fans rooting for their relationship.
Elsewhere, Principal Ava (Janelle James) finds an unlikely ally in Mac, who diverts his community service duties to serve Ava’s personal needs, from car detailing to engaging in mild blackmail for a good cause. Mac’s antics help secure a new scoreboard for the gym and push forward a significant Abbott storyline, showcasing McElhenney’s knack for the mockumentary style.
The episode “Volunteers” is packed with so much enjoyable content that its brief duration leaves you wanting more. The potential for additional fun interactions, like Mac and Jacob exchanging glances or Melissa exploring “the skeeviest bar,” is immense. However, the episode cleverly leaves viewers craving further adventures, which we are promised in an upcoming It’s Always Sunny In Philadelphia episode that will likely recount the school events from the gang’s perspective—and hopefully explain Dennis’s mysterious activities.
