A year into its release, some PCs were still unable to access the update via Windows Update.
Microsoft took corrective measures by implementing temporary blocks to address these incompatibilities. These “safeguard holds” were specifically targeted at two major issues. The first involved PCs with security or business software utilizing the ‘sprotect.sys’ driver developed by SenseShield Technology. This driver was causing BSODs on startup, leading Microsoft to halt the update rollout for affected machines in April last year. After SenseShield released an updated version of the driver, Microsoft removed this block, deeming it unnecessary to continue the restrictions.
The second hold, which dated back to September 2024, dealt with certain desktop personalization applications that disrupted display settings, caused icons to vanish, or rendered virtual desktops unusable. Once again, Microsoft monitored the situation until it stabilized, and eventually lifted this hold as well.
Update Deployment and User Impact
With the last two safeguard holds lifted, the affected computers are expected to receive the update within 48 hours through Windows Update. Users may expedite this process by restarting their PCs, which helps the system detect the release of these blocks and update more promptly.
Preparing for Windows 11 25H2
The resolution of these issues coincides with the phasing out of Windows 11 23H2, scheduled to end on November 11, 2025. This synchronization allows the last of the blocked machines to transition smoothly to a more recent version of the operating system.
In parallel, Microsoft has been rolling out Windows 11 25H2 since October 1. This update is gradually becoming available to devices set to receive the latest updates as soon as they are released. However, the pace of this rollout still depends on ongoing compatibility checks and deployment strategies.
