Exploring “Whisper Mountain Outbreak”: A New Take on Co-op Survival Horror
When I first heard about Whisper Mountain Outbreak, I had my doubts. The game, a cooperative roguelike, aims to blend the intricate puzzle-solving and survival horror aspects of Resident Evil into a randomized experience. Released today in Early Access, this latest offering from Indonesian developer Toge Productions (known for No Space for the Unbound and Coffee Talk) arrives amidst a surge in cooperative horror games, but stands out with its unique zombie-infested gameplay.
My initial skepticism stemmed from how Resident Evil’s most memorable scares are meticulously crafted—like the infamous dog leap or Papa Baker’s sudden appearances. The puzzles too, especially in the earlier entries, involve navigating through complex settings to find specific items, creating a deliberately paced challenge that’s central to the franchise’s appeal, such as in the 2022 Resident Evil remake.
Yet, Whisper Mountain Outbreak captures the essence of classic ’90s survival horror, and surprisingly, its randomness significantly heightens the game’s tension as you navigate through zombie-overrun suburbs and crumbling educational buildings.
The adventure kicks off with your character waking beside an injured officer from the Bureau of Research and Investigation of Metaphysics (B.R.I.M.), who enlists your help to locate artifacts to prevent a world-ending “anomaly”. Currently, the game primarily features a zombie apocalypse scenario called “The Outbreak”, serving more as a backdrop for action rather than a deep narrative.
The Gritty Details of Gameplay
Each mission begins with choosing a task from a detective’s cork board, a nod to another horror title, Phasmophobia. You’re then placed into various 2.5D environments reminiscent of the shadowy locales familiar to veterans of the Resident Evil series. Completing these missions is key to success in the game.
Objectives typically involve retrieving items like a briefcase, navigating through locked doors and solving multiple puzzles—from cipher decoding to lock picking—all while battling relentless zombies. Classic survival horror elements are present: limited ammunition, scarce storage, and the essential herb-mixing for stronger healing remedies.
What really sets the game apart is how the random events introduce dynamic scares. Managing smaller groups of zombies may be straightforward, but periodic horde attacks can overwhelm, forcing players to either barricade themselves or push forward. The tension escalates with time, as delays can lead to encountering even more formidable monsters.
One memorable moment had me solving a math problem when a zombie burst through a window, prompting an urgent switch from pen and paper to rapid mouse-clicking. These unexpected encounters, combined with the occult-like nature of the zombies, add a fresh layer of horror to the gameplay.
Combat Tactics and Challenges
The combat system offers a satisfying mix of melee and ranged attacks. A baseball bat can be surprisingly effective, especially with a charged swing that knocks zombies down, allowing for follow-up attacks. Firearms are useful for distance but consume precious ammo. After achieving an objective, you must escape to your car while an endless horde pursues, adding to the game’s intensity.
However, the user interface could use some improvements. Weapon switching is cumbersome, requiring menu navigation that can be fatal in hectic moments. The game, still in Early Access, also shows some rough edges like subpar English translations.
Looking ahead, the longevity of the game’s puzzles and level variety remains to be seen, though the current setup is promising.
Overall, Whisper Mountain Outbreak impressively adapts the key features of survival horror into a cooperative, run-based format. With its initial release in Early Access already showing strong potential, it’s exciting to think about what future updates might bring to this pixelated nightmare.
Whisper Mountain Outbreak is developed and published by Toge Productions and is now available on Steam Early Access as of August 11, 2025.
