Unity Faces a Wave of Layoffs Amid Organizational Changes

In less pleasant news, Unity Technologies, the company behind the popular game development engine, is undergoing significant layoffs as part of “organizational changes.” The details emerged via a series of LinkedIn posts and were further reported by 80lv, which revealed that an unspecified but substantial number of employees received their termination notices through a generic email address, some even in the middle of the night due to time zone differences.

This isn’t the first time Unity has made such a move. In fact, the company has seen several rounds of layoffs in recent years, including nearly 300 in January 2023, 600 in May 2023, 256 in November 2023, and a massive 1,800 in January 2024, which constituted 25% of its workforce at the time. According to an email from CEO Matthew Bromberg, the latest cuts primarily affect the technology, product, and advertising teams. Bromberg’s message acknowledged the ongoing challenges and fatigue associated with these changes but expressed optimism about 2025 being a transformative year for Unity.

Introducing Tryhard: A New Take on Rugby by Robert Yang

On a lighter note, Robert Yang, renowned for his innovative and boundary-pushing games like Cobra Club and Stick Shift, has announced his latest project. Tryhard, developed by Grapefruit Games (a studio he founded with his husband Eddie Cameron), is a rugby RPG set in New Zealand. This game introduces players to the life of a budding rugby team striving to make a mark in their homeland.

Tryhard is described as a “sportslike” game, a genre that aims to represent the sport more broadly, covering everything from in-game rules and match dynamics to external interactions among players, fans, and even stadium staff. Grapefruit Games has even released a manifesto to define this new subgenre. While there’s no release date yet, rugby and gaming fans alike can look forward to finding Tryhard on Steam soon.
