You won’t believe what one of the creators of Monkey Island is mixing with Zelda — and Diablo — in his next game.

A surprising new project from a classic designer

Veteran game designer Ron Gilbert, best known for pioneering point-and-click adventures like Maniac Mansion and the Monkey Island series, is developing a fresh title that reportedly blends elements of his Thimbleweed Park universe with inspirations drawn from Zelda and Diablo. The news was picked up by Time Extension and expanded through Gilbert’s own posts on Mastodon.

Where the information comes from

The earliest public details come from Gilbert’s social feed, where he shared the first screenshots and development notes. In March he posted the project’s initial capture and mentioned that the game engine is approaching a state suitable for more intensive work. Additional references appear on the Terrible Toybox studio website (Gilbert’s studio), where the project is currently listed under the placeholder “Game Name TBD.”

What the images show

Gilbert uploaded several screenshots to Mastodon that provide a first look at the game’s visual direction. Those images — collected and shared by followers and outlets — hint at an action-RPG framework informed by classic adventure sensibilities. The Mastodon gallery is the primary visual source for the project at this early stage.

Who is involved so far

Details about the development team remain sparse. One confirmed name is Elisa Harris, credited as a mission designer. Beyond that, Gilbert has not released a full team roster, so many of the contributors and their roles are currently unlisted.

Timing and expectations

Terrible Toybox’s page notes a very tentative release window: “late 2024,” but it also acknowledges that the schedule could slide into 2025 — a caveat the studio attributes to the unpredictable nature of game development. No firm platform announcements, pricing, or distribution plans have been published yet.

Summary of the current picture

To recap: Ron Gilbert is developing an untitled RPG that mixes his adventure pedigree with action-RPG influences. Early screenshots and status updates have appeared on Mastodon, Elisa Harris is attached as mission designer, and the studio lists the game as “Game Name TBD” with a loose launch target around late 2024 or possibly 2025. Further specifics will likely arrive as development progresses and Gilbert shares more updates.
