The Iconic Video Game Far Cry is Set to Transform into Noah Hawley’s New Anthology Series

With Mythic Quest wrapping up, Rob McElhenney, previously known as Rob Mac, finds himself in need of a new project to channel his passion for video games. Enter Noah Hawley, who recently inked a comprehensive deal with FX, paving the way for their collaboration on a brand new Far Cry series. In line with both Hawley’s Fargo and the Far Cry games, the show is envisioned as an anthology, introducing a fresh cast and different backdrops with each season. While it’s poised to be a multi-season endeavor, its continuation will depend on viewer reception. Hawley was reportedly drawn to the project by its anthology format.

Hawley expressed his enthusiasm for the project, stating, “The thing that excites me about the Far Cry franchise is its anthology nature. Each installment is a fresh take on a central theme, much like each season of Fargo. The opportunity to craft a dynamic action series that can evolve annually while delving into the complexities of human nature through a turbulent and multifaceted narrative is incredibly appealing. Collaborating with Rob and channeling our combined, bold creative vision onto the screen is something I’m really looking forward to.”

McElhenney also shared his excitement, remarking, “Working with Noah is literally a dream come true. Ubisoft has given us tremendous support and freedom with one of the most revered video game landscapes ever devised.”

Since its debut on Xbox in 2004, Far Cry has been a staple at Ubisoft. Known for its series of first-person shooters, the franchise doesn’t strictly adhere to a linear storyline. Instead, it typically features a lone anti-hero navigating perilous territories, from the racially charged rural America to the fictional totalitarian regime of Yara led by Giancarlo Esposito’s dictator character. The franchise includes six main games and numerous spin-offs, but it has also been the center of ongoing debates concerning its controversial portrayals of racial and ethical issues. Despite these challenges, this isn’t the franchise’s first foray into live-action adaptations; many will recall Uwe Boll’s 2008 film version starring Til Schweiger and the esteemed Udo Kier. Hawley and McElhenney certainly have high standards to meet with their adaptation.
