Both series, starring Jensen Ackles and Daniel Dae Kim, were discontinued after their first seasons.
Prime Video delivered some unfortunate news today: Countdown and Butterfly have both been dropped after just one season as the streaming service reviews its roster of new scripted shows. In August, the young adult series Motorheads was also cut, while We Were Liars, Overcompensating, and Ballard managed to avoid cancellation for now.
Countdown featured Supernatural’s Jensen Ackles, Euphoria‘s Eric Dane, and All Rise‘s Jessica Camacho in a thrilling plot to unravel a sinister scheme and rescue Los Angeles. Although Ackles’ team won’t return to save cities in future crises, he continues to impact Prime Video through Chaos Machine, the production company he established with his wife, Danneel Ackles. They’ve secured a first look deal with the platform. Ackles is set to return as Soldier Boy in the upcoming fifth and final season of The Boys with his former Supernatural colleagues Jared Padalecki and Misha Collins. He will also lead the forthcoming The Boys prequel spinoff, Vought Rising.
The espionage thriller Butterfly starred Daniel Dae Kim as a former U.S. intelligence agent residing in South Korea, who is forced to flee from a lethal adversary (Reina Hardesty) as he deals with the repercussions of a previous choice. The series, inspired by Arash Amel’s graphic novel series, also featured Kim Ji-hoon, Park Hae-soo, Kim Tae-hee, Charles Parnell, and others.
According to Deadline, the cancellation of these shows was not inevitable. Both series had performed well, with Countdown ranking eighth and Butterfly sixth in the Nielsen top 10 for Streaming Originals. Countdown has even remained on Prime Video’s Top 10 list since its finale over a month ago, currently holding the tenth spot. The competition in streaming is fierce; sometimes, a minor detail can seal the fate of a show.
