The television series Peacemaker concluded its second season to critical acclaim and highlighted what many believe to be John Cena’s finest acting performance to date. Despite its success, James Gunn, the creator of the series and head of DC Studios, has indicated that there are no immediate plans for a third season. “The focus is on other narratives where this [finale cliffhanger] will unfold,” Gunn remarked during a press conference after the finale (as reported by Variety). He left the door slightly ajar for the future, however, saying he would “never say never” to continuing the series but affirmed, “Right now, it’s about the future of the DCU.”

Even though the series Peacemaker might not be coming back, the character Peacemaker himself is poised for a return, potentially in the much-anticipated Superman sequel, Man Of Tomorrow. At the season’s conclusion, Chris found himself in the alternate universe metahuman prison known as “Salvation,” a place Gunn says will be central to Man Of Tomorrow. “It might not be apparent at first, but everything is intricately connected,” he hinted. “From the outset, I had a clear vision of the overarching narrative in the DCU, and integral to that were elements like Checkmate and particularly Salvation.”

Checkmate, the newly established crime-fighting team introduced in the finale, represents “the ultimate evolution of the 11th Street Kids and their commitment to justice,” according to Gunn. He noted that this group would operate “independently from other DCU institutions,” presumably separate from the current Justice League, or as it’s presently known, the Justice Gang. It remains uncertain whether Checkmate will feature in its own series or appear in other DC projects, but Gunn’s comments suggest we will definitely see more of them. “They are poised to excel in their roles,” he noted. “The next time we encounter them, their situation will have notably evolved from their current nascent stage.”
