The upcoming CES 2025, scheduled for January in Las Vegas, is set to unveil a new HDMI standard, potentially called HDMI 2.2. The HDMI Licensing Administrator, Inc. (HDMI LA) has begun informing the press about a major announcement they plan to make during this event. This new version is anticipated to surpass the current capabilities in bandwidth and resolution.
The team behind this widely used video and audio transmission standard, the HDMI Forum, has organized a press conference on January 6, 2025, to disclose the technical specifications and the expected influence of this new standard on the consumer electronics market.
There is ongoing speculation that HDMI 2.2 will be designed to work with the soon-to-be-released Nvidia GeForce RTX 50-series and AMD Radeon RX 8000 series graphics processing units (GPUs). Both Nvidia and AMD have planned their CES announcements on the same day as the HDMI Forum, suggesting a synchronization of new HDMI and DisplayPort 2.1 technologies. This alignment could provide consumers with enhanced options for high-definition media and gaming.
Although the complete details of HDMI 2.2 are still under wraps, HDMI LA has confirmed that it will incorporate cutting-edge technology supporting increased resolutions, higher refresh rates, and superior transmission quality. They also indicated that utilizing these new features would require a new type of HDMI cable, representing a significant shift for both content creators and consumers.
The upcoming HDMI 2.2 aims to offer uncompressed support for higher resolutions, such as 8K at 120 Hz and 10K at even greater frame rates. The current standard, HDMI 2.1b, supports a maximum data rate of 48 Gbps and can handle 8K60 with the help of Display Stream Compression (DSC). The introduction of HDMI 2.2 could potentially remove the need for DSC or refine its use, ensuring a smoother delivery of high-quality visuals.
