Are you tired of hidden fees on premium-rate phone numbers? Well, you’re not alone! Discover how a French company faced hefty fines for sneaky charges and what you can do to protect yourself.
The Hidden Costs of Information Services
In a recent crackdown by the French Directorate General for Competition, Consumer Affairs, and Fraud Control (DGCCRF), the company Monetiz, based in Bordeaux, was fined a total of €52,000. This significant penalty was imposed due to Monetiz’s lack of transparency in their billing practices concerning premium-rate numbers, known as 118 XYZ numbers. These numbers, typically used for information services, were sneakily costing customers more than expected.
Monetiz was found guilty of not informing customers that charges would continue to accrue even after the initial connection was made to the requested information service. This meant that while customers thought they were only paying for the time taken to retrieve information, they were actually being charged for the duration of the subsequent conversation as well. This practice not only misled consumers but blatantly violated consumer protection laws that mandate clear communication of pricing information.
Executives’ Wallets Take a Hit
The DGCCRF’s investigation, supported by the National Service of Investigations, revealed that two executives from Monetiz were individually fined €26,000 each. These fines reflect the seriousness with which the French authorities treat deceptive commercial practices, especially those involving hidden fees in telephone services. Such practices are particularly egregious because they can significantly inflate consumers’ phone bills without their explicit consent or knowledge.
Empowering Consumers Against Overcharges
Fortunately, there are tools available that help consumers fight back against these unethical practices. Platforms like SignalConso allow consumers to report issues encountered with professionals easily, while Surmafacture provides a reverse directory to check and report out-of-plan billed services. Additionally, the DGCCRF offers practical advice through a guide titled “Premium-rate numbers, don’t fall into the trap,” aimed at educating the public about these pitfalls.
The case of Monetiz serves as a reminder of the importance of vigilance when using paid services. Consumers must stay informed and utilize available resources to protect themselves from unexpected and unfair billing practices. Always check the fine print and use consumer protection tools to report and avoid potential scams.
