To give a clearer picture of how EV batteries stand the test of time and usage, Generational’s study details the battery life according to different ages and mileages:
– EVs aged between 4 and 5 years showed a median battery preservation rate of 93.53%.
– Those aged between 8 and 9 years registered around 85% battery retention.
– EVs with over 160,000 kilometers on the odometer typically maintained 88% to 95% of their battery capacity.
These findings suggest that electric vehicle batteries may outperform the expectations set by their warranties, which often guarantee only 70% capacity retention after eight years or 160,000 kilometers.
Reevaluating Electric Vehicle Maintenance
The study suggests that the traditional metrics used for assessing the wear and tear on internal combustion engine vehicles may not be as applicable to EVs. For instance, a three-year-old electric car with 145,000 kilometers might have a better-preserved battery than a six-year-old EV which has only covered 48,000 kilometers. This disparity highlights the significance of usage patterns and charging habits over mere age or mileage.
