A Unique Duty for Texas Law Enforcement

Being an officer in the Texas Department of Public Safety might not always align with what one initially expects. A PBS report highlights the ongoing intense situation in Austin:

Officers were stationed outside the Capitol offices of lawmakers, and Representative Mihaela Plesa from the suburbs of Dallas mentioned an officer accompanied her as she drove back to her Austin apartment on Monday evening after spending a considerable part of the day in her office. She noted that the officer joined her for a staff lunch and even accompanied her in the hallway during restroom breaks.

Recently, a group of Texas Democrats made headlines by leaving the state earlier this month to stall a vote on what they viewed as an overt seizure of power by the President. They have since returned to the state capital, facing what seems like a theatrical welcome. The Republican-majority state House imposed a peculiar requirement on the Democrats, demanding they sign documents essentially serving as “permission slips” that allow state officers to monitor their movements to prevent any further absences. Despite their return being voluntary and public, this measure was put in place.

The drama does not stop with the signing of permission slips. Representative Nicole Collier expressed her disapproval of this mandate during an MSNBC interview, saying, “The moment that the directive was issued, I felt it was wrong. It’s just not right to require adults to obtain a permission slip to move freely. So, I resisted.”

Collier conducted the interview from the floor of the State House, where she remains confined as of Tuesday afternoon. She opted not to sign the slip, and as a result, she theoretically risks arrest if she attempts to leave. She spent Monday night on the chamber floor and filed a habeas corpus petition on Tuesday. The petition states, “Representative Collier is not absent, so the restraint on her liberty is illegal.”

The Democrats argue that even though the Texas legislature is likely to push through its gerrymandering plans with the returned members, they have made their point clear. This action has prompted other states to consider similar redistricting strategies, with California, led by Governor Gavin Newsom, notably drawing a response lawsuit from Republicans with its own redistricting efforts. The political landscape is fraught with tensions, especially with the midterm elections just 15 months away, and a party seemingly intent on maintaining and solidifying its hold on power.

Collier, reflecting on the situation from her self-described legislative “prison cell,” remarked, “They typically say, take the high road. Well, that high road has crumbled. We’re on a dirt road now, and we’re ready to confront them there, getting down and dirty just like they are.”
