Exciting news from the automotive world as the Car of the Year jury has announced the winner for this year’s coveted trophy, and guess what? The Mercedes CLA has clinched the title once again! This remarkable vehicle has outshined its competitors, marking its second win in history, following its last triumph back in 1974 with the Mercedes 450.
The Champions and Challengers
This year’s competition saw a fierce lineup of finalists including the Citroën C5 Aircross, Dacia Bigster, Fiat Grande Panda, Kia EV4, Mercedes-Benz CLA, Skoda Elroq, and the Renault 4 E-Tech. Each model brought something unique to the table, but it was the Mercedes-Benz CLA that ultimately stole the show.
The Mercedes-Benz CLA didn’t just win; it dominated with a staggering 320 points, leaving the Skoda Elroq (220 points) and the Kia EV4 (208 points) trailing significantly behind. The jury praised the CLA for its impressive electric capabilities, which include a robust 85 kWh battery offering generous range, swift charging, and a luxuriously appointed interior.
The Disappointment for Renault
On the flip side, this year turned out to be a letdown for Renault, particularly with their much-anticipated Renault 4 E-Tech. Despite the successes of its predecessors, the Renault 5 E-Tech and Renault Scénic, the R4 E-Tech could not live up to expectations and ended up at the bottom of the scoreboard with 150 points. This score was even lower than the Dacia Bigster, another model under the Renault umbrella, which managed 170 points.
Furthermore, no French brand made it to the podium this year, a surprising twist given the past performances. The Citroën C5 Aircross was the highest-ranking French contender, finishing just shy of the podium with 207 points, just one point behind the Kia model.
Jury’s Favorite Picks
The Car of the Year jury, comprising several esteemed automotive journalists, showed a clear preference for certain models. The Mercedes-Benz CLA was the top favorite, securing the first place in 22 ballots. It was followed by the Citroën C5 Aircross, which was the favorite of 15 journalists. Not far behind was the Fiat Grande Panda, which managed to impress nine journalists enough to rank it at the top, closely followed by the Škoda Elroq with eight top votes. Unfortunately, the Renault 4 did not win the favor of any jury member this year, possibly due to the high expectations set by its successful predecessors.
This year’s Car of the Year event has certainly provided plenty of surprises and insights into the evolving preferences in the automotive industry. As the dust settles, the Mercedes CLA takes a victory lap, while competitors look to next year for redemption.
