Apple recently took a stand in front of an influential audience at the National Music Publishers’ Association (NMPA) in the United States. The tech giant made it clear that they see music as an art form that should be paid for, not given away for free. Oliver Schusser, who oversees Apple Music, Apple TV+, and Apple Sports, passionately shared this perspective. He highlighted the issue with free music services, directly targeting Spotify’s ad-supported free tier, which he regards as a “grave mistake.”

The Philosophy Behind Apple’s Music Strategy

Schusser’s comments did not just stop at criticizing competitors. He emphasized that Apple views music as an art that should always be valued. “It’s crazy that after twenty years, music is still offered for free. That’s a big mistake… As a company, we view music as an art, and we would never want to give art away for free,” Schusser explained to David Israelite, the president and CEO of the NMPA. This philosophy underlines why Apple Music does not have a free tier, unlike its competitors like Spotify, Amazon Music, Deezer, and YouTube Music.

Apple’s Strategy and the European Commission’s Involvement

Despite not being the market leader in music streaming, Apple has had to navigate various challenges, including those posed by the European Commission. Much of the scrutiny was a result of complaints from Spotify, which criticized Apple for technical limitations on devices like the Apple Watch and deemed unfair the commissions on subscriptions made through the App Store.

Comparing Apples and Oranges?

Apple’s stance is not without its contradictions. While Schusser argues against free access to music, Apple does offer three months of free Apple Music with purchases like new AirPods or HomePods. This strategy seems to clash with their stated philosophy. Furthermore, while discussing the exclusivity of content like the latest season of the series “Severance” on Apple TV+, which forces users to pay if they want access, Apple does not maintain this strict paywall for its music streaming, where many tracks are still accessible for free on other platforms.

The Economic Aspect of Streaming

Financially, Apple claims to support artists more robustly than Spotify. According to a report by Duetti, in 2024, artists can expect to earn approximately $6.2 per 1000 streams on Apple Music, which is double what Spotify pays at $3 for the same amount. Amazon tops the generosity list by offering $8.8 per 1000 streams.

While Apple Music might not lead the market, it’s becoming an increasingly formidable contender against Spotify, with its commitment to high-quality, lossless music, personalized content, and seamless accessibility—even for those who don’t own Apple devices. This approach not only challenges Spotify but also reshapes how we might view and value music streaming services in the future.
