You won’t believe what’s keeping Green Lantern’s future hanging by a thread — and why HBO’s hit series hasn’t been automatically promised a second round.

Renewal is not a sure thing, says DC leadership

Despite warm reviews and strong viewership, HBO’s Green Lantern series has not yet been officially renewed. Peter Safran, co-CEO of DC Studios, has made it clear that a second season is not automatic. He explained that the show’s creative team must convince DC that there is a continuation worthy of the original run. Safran told Collider that the final call will be made before the end of the year.

Ratings alone won’t decide the fate of the franchise

DC’s stance emphasizes more than just audience numbers. While the series successfully brought Green Lanterns back into fan conversations and restored some of the characters’ reputation, the company is reluctant to greenlight more episodes purely on the basis of the debut’s success. The priority, Safran indicated, is to ensure any follow-up matches the quality and tone already established rather than extending the franchise for its own sake.

Writers exploring grounded, gradual expansion

Showrunner Chris Mundy and his writers’ room have already been brainstorming possible directions for a second season. Mundy has signaled a preference for keeping the show’s realistic foundation — largely Earth-centered storytelling — and expanding outward in stages rather than introducing every cosmic element at once. The creative approach would build on the grounded base the series set in order to layer in new characters and broader worldbuilding steadily.

Who would return to the creative team?

If the series is renewed, Mundy is expected to remain as showrunner and Vanessa Baden Kelly would also come back. However, Damon Lindelof and Tom King are not slated to be part of a potential new season. Reported additions to the writing lineup under consideration include Christopher Cantwell, Nakkiah Lui, Zack Whedon, and Selwyn Seyfu Hinds.

What the finale means for Hal Jordan and John Stewart

The uncertain future of the show raises questions about the characters’ trajectories. Aaron Pierre’s John Stewart is set to continue his story in Man of Tomorrow, but Hal Jordan’s fate is murkier after the season’s closing moments. Safran declined to spell out the significance of the final scene in which John charges the ring and Hal appears as a hologram, leaving the interpretation open. DC maintains that no doors are definitively closed, but they will only proceed if a compelling narrative reason exists to “put the ring back on” a character.

Timing and next steps

In short, DC Studios will weigh artistic justification alongside commercial success. The creative team’s proposals and the studio’s review will determine whether Green Lantern returns; that outcome will be revealed before year’s end.
