Imagine a world where the dead aren’t just spooky tales whispered in the dark, but have returned with messages we need to hear. This gripping concept is at the heart of “Mis muertos tristes,” a new miniseries from Pablo Larraín, inspired by the literary universe of Mariana Enriquez and spinning out from several of her stories.

When the Dead Whisper

Set in the fictional town of Piedrabuena, the narrative unfolds around Ema, a retired doctor played by Mercedes Morán, who has spent her life quietly living alongside the dead, or what she prefers to term “presences.” Ema has her own set of rules to cope with these apparitions: never engage, stay detached, and most importantly, don’t let the dead disrupt the mundane flow of everyday life. However, the delicate balance she maintains is shattered with the death of her mother and the arrival of her niece, Julie, portrayed by Carolina Sánchez Álvarez. Unlike Ema, Julie embraces her ability to see the dead, engaging with them on a deeply personal level, even physically.

A Town Haunted

The plot thickens as three teenage girls are murdered in the neighborhood, transforming what was once Ema’s private burden into a public menace that starts to affect all of Piedrabuena. Larraín leverages this premise to explore not only the existence of ghosts, which is taken as a given from the outset, but also the profound reasons behind their presence among the living.

Generational Echoes

As the supernatural events escalate, Ema is compelled to confront the emotional distances she’s long maintained. Her daughter Carolina, played by Dolores Fonzi, brings a legacy of unspoken grievances and unresolved dialogues. Meanwhile, Lidia, Ema’s sister and Julie’s mother, struggles to comprehend her daughter’s eerie gift. The narrative weaves a tapestry of generational wounds and silences, where not only the ghosts return, but also the unresolved familial conflicts that haunt them through the ages.

As the presence of the ghosts multiplies, the issue ceases to be a Klatt family secret and becomes a village-wide crisis. The dead invade homes, forcing residents to confront past traumas they’d rather forget, symbolized by water ominously beginning to overflow from tanks, suggesting that what was once contained is now spilling over into every part of the community.

A Supernatural Reflection of Society

“Mis muertos tristes” uses the lens of supernatural horror to delve into themes of abandonment, memory, and societal wounds that linger beneath the surface. This chilling exploration is available for streaming on Netflix, offering a haunting yet profound viewing experience that bridges the gap between the living and the dead, and the past and the present. Join in to uncover why the dead have returned and what they seek from the living.
