Noah Hawley will continue his extraterrestrial narration on FX with Alien: Earth for the foreseeable future. This morning, FX confirmed the renewal of Alien: Earth for a second season, securing Hawley under a new comprehensive contract. Although the anticipation of a second season seemed almost certain given the heavy promotional efforts by FX, the network had kept quiet on the subject in recent times. The series reboot, which centers on a young synthetic child who forms an unlikely friendship with a novice Xenomorph hunter via unique sound communications, enjoyed robust viewership, particularly among the Baby Boomer demographic. The series concluded in September, and while Hawley hinted then that confirmation of a second season might be some months away, this latest season diverged from its predecessors by sparing the lives of key characters, including a particularly unpleasant trillionaire whose survival seems to set the stage for his return.
Hawley’s extended agreement with FX doesn’t really come as a shock. Ever since his successful adaptation of Fargo in 2014, Hawley has shown consistent loyalty to the network and its parent entities, managing to produce Legion amidst his commitments to Fargo set in North Dakota and the greater Twin Cities area. His relationship with the network’s affiliates continued into 2019 when 20th Century Fox distributed Hawley’s single theatrical release, Lucy In The Sky. Clearly, Hawley has demonstrated he’s a team player, a trait that often leads to good outcomes in the Alien universe. Yet, the lingering question remains about last season’s unexpected Ice Age references.
While no specific date for the premiere of season two has been set, the production of Alien: Earth is slated to shift from Thailand to London and will commence next year.
