Three Distinct Universes Merge Through a Singular Theme

After spending three weeks trying to grasp the overarching concept of Task, everything clicked into place recently. This series isn’t simply about the clash between criminals and law enforcement; it’s deeply focused on three fathers striving to keep both their actual and symbolic families intact.

Firstly, we see Mark Ruffalo’s character, Agent Tom Brandis. Mourning the loss of his children Sara, Emily, and Ethan, he also serves as a father figure to his team of young agents. Then there’s Robbie Prendergrast, played by Tom Pelphrey, a garbage collector turned thief who not only has his own children but also views himself as the guardian of a makeshift family, dreaming of a new start in Canada. Lastly, Jamie McShane’s Perry, a high-ranking member of the Dark Hearts biker gang, treats the chapter president Jayson as if he were his own son.

Focusing on Perry as the central character from the Dark Hearts storyline brings much-needed balance and coherence to Task. The show is now clearly about three men clinging to their traditional authority, and the younger characters who navigate the turbulent, chaotic waves they leave behind.

This theme is emphasized during the series’ first flashback featuring Robbie’s brother Billy (Jack Kesy). Task has hinted that Billy was a cherished member of his circle, and we now see why. During a family outing at the lake, Billy exudes confidence and joy, providing sage advice and even humorously easing the tension with a crude joke alongside a genuine compliment when discussing Robbie’s failing marriage. He’s portrayed as a charismatic, wise figure.

However, Billy’s wisdom has its flaws, as he continues an affair that we know leads to his violent demise. Despite this, his confident demeanor inspires Robbie to adopt similarly grand gestures and risky plans to protect his family, though not always successfully. By the end of this episode, Robbie’s plans unravel, leading to fear, anger, and tragedy within his family.

While Ruffalo’s Agent Brandis is less prominent this episode, we witness his shortcomings through his daughter Emily’s experiences. After a night out, she struggles with more than typical teenage issues, grappling with her identity as an adoptee and the traumatic family secrets she bears.

The narrative also portrays Perry as an abusive father figure. His investigation into a mole within the Dark Hearts leads to brutal actions as he seeks to control his surrogate children through violence, highlighting a complex, destructive form of paternal care that has dire consequences.

Meanwhile, the FBI task force storyline feels somewhat disconnected, focusing on three agents whose personal traits and professional challenges don’t yet fully integrate with the show’s main thematic currents. The mystery surrounding a mole within the team adds intrigue but also confusion about the characters’ true natures and loyalties.

As the plot thickens, there’s hope that upcoming episodes will weave these narrative threads together more tightly, enhancing the character-driven drama that Task excels at.
