Are you ready for a television first? This Sunday, the Spanish series “Mar afuera” makes its groundbreaking debut, but it’s not just the plot that’s capturing headlines. For the first time ever, a Spanish series will be simultaneously launched on two different streaming platforms, creating a unique event in the on-demand TV landscape.
A Revolutionary Streaming Agreement
In an unprecedented move, Disney+ and Atresplayer have joined forces to bring “Mar afuera” to audiences across both platforms simultaneously. Announced just this Monday by Disney and Atresmedia, this historic deal marks a significant shift in how content is distributed in Spain. Subscribers of either service will now have access to this and other content from Atresplayer as part of their existing subscriptions.
This collaboration goes beyond the usual practice of adding shows like “Tu cara me suena” and series such as “La encrucijada” and “Sueños de libertad” to the streaming services after their initial broadcast. Instead, it introduces co-exclusive streaming rights, allowing for a simultaneous premiere that sets a new precedent.
Introducing “Mar afuera”
“Mar afuera,” an adaptation of the Italian series “Mare fuori,” dives into the lives of two young inmates, Gabriel Guevara and Hugo Welzel, who find themselves in a juvenile detention center. As they serve their sentences, they must navigate the dangers posed by a gang known as Los Pajaritos, clinging to hope amidst their bleak prospects.
The series spans eight episodes and features a diverse cast including Miguel Barraga, Nekane Otxoa, La Imén, Julen Katzy, Dani Marrero, Natalia Azahara, Marcel Serrano, Pablo Louazel, Jan Bonet, Itziar Atienza, Carles Francino, Raúl Prieto, and Boré Buika. Directed by Norberto López Amado and Rómulo Aguillaume, the script is penned by Jelen Morales, Sara Cano, Paula Fabra, and Natxo López, promising a compelling mix of drama and intrigue.
This Sunday’s premiere of “Mar afuera” not only offers an exciting new show for viewers but also signifies a landmark moment in streaming history, reshaping how global audiences access and enjoy Spanish television.
