This survey, which involved over 200 activists worldwide, identifies Facebook as the leading platform for online abuse, cited by 62% of respondents as their biggest source of digital aggression. WhatsApp and Instagram, also owned by Meta, trail behind at 36% and 26% respectively.
The real horror emerges from how online threats translate into real-world dangers. A shocking 75% of activists who suffered physical harm believe these attacks were a direct result of their online presence. Cyberbullying has transcended beyond a mere virtual threat, morphing into a prelude to physical violence. This includes severe repercussions from disinformation campaigns, doxxing (leaking private information), and slander.
One particularly alarming case in Indonesia highlights the severity of the situation. A community organizer was branded a communist on Facebook—a label that could spell life-threatening consequences in the local political climate. Despite her efforts to report these threats, her pleas were ignored, with Meta concluding that the posts did not violate its community standards.
A Multifaceted Toxicity
This study not only shines a light on the specific dangers posed by Facebook but also calls into question the effectiveness of current content moderation practices. Global Witness and the affected activists are urging Meta to allocate more resources to protect specific targets of abuse. The current algorithms, which struggle to grasp cultural and linguistic nuances, can inadvertently place individuals at risk—a word or phrase, benign in one context, can prove deadly in another.
While Facebook garners attention for its significant impact on certain users, it’s crucial not to absolve other platforms of their roles in fostering toxic environments. Other research frequently ranks X as the leader in aggressive interactions and TikTok for its impact on the mental health of younger users.
