Uber autonomous car has truck and killed a female pedestrian

Last night a woman was struck by an Uber autonomous car in Tempe, Arizona. She later died of her injuries in the hospital.

ABC15 reported the incident and was later confirmed to Gizmodo by Uber and Tempe police department. The collision took place around 10PM at the intersection Mill Avenue and Curry Road, both of which are multi-lane roads.

The Police department have identified the victim as 49-year-old Elaine Herzberg. She was crossing the street at the time she was struck.
Autonomous vehicle developers often test drive at night, during storms, and other challenging conditions to help their vehicles learn to navigate in a variety of environments.

Uber has confirmed that the vehicle was traveling in autonomous mode with a safety driver behind the wheel during the crash. That is the first known incident of an autonomous car crash that has killed a person of a crash.

Uber has put a halt on autonomous car tests and has pulled them from traffic.
