It has been more than 15 years that the HPV vaccination is considered safe. However, a recent study suggested that it comes with some side effects. Well, before jumping onto the side effects of the HPV vaccine, let us first discuss the types of HPV.

HPV has more than 40 distinctive types. The side effects of HPV on males and females depend on the kind of virus one has contracted. A few types of HPV also cause warts in the genitals. While some types of HPV also cause cancer in cells. The most common side effect of HPV is cervical cancer. It also cases malignancy of the vagina, penis, vulva, head, anus, and neck.

Why you should get vaccinated against HPV?

An infection caused by HPV is stubborn. Sexually active people are at higher risk of contracting HPV at some point in their lives. In some countries in the world, over 42 million people are infected with human papillomavirus, while several of them are not even aware of it. If one of the partners is infected, there are higher chances that the other will also get the infection. An infection caused by HPV shows no symptoms in the majority of people but in the later stage, it can cause genital warts and even anal cancer in both males and females.  An HPV infection can also lead to the cause of throat cancer.

When should an adult get vaccinated against HPV?

Ideally, one should get vaccinated against the HPV vaccine before they get sexually active. Boys and girls can also get the vaccine during their adolescent period.

Side effects of the HPV vaccine

HPV vaccine sometimes causes side effects. Some of them are mentioned herein below:

  • One out of every ten people who received the HPV vaccine experienced swelling, redness, soreness where the injection was administered. They also experienced headaches, which did not last for longer days. Some even said that after getting Gardasil or Gardasil 9 HPV vaccine, they had a fever, or getting flashes, feeling shaky and nauseous. The other side effects are a pain in fingers, hands, arms, feet, legs, and toes.
  • A rare side effect of Gardasil or Gardasil 9 HPV vaccination is itchy red rash. This is not very common and one out of a thousand people experience this.
  • One of the most uncommon side effects is difficulty in breathing or obstruction in the airway. This happens in one out of ten thousand people.

Is the HPV vaccine safe?

Before any vaccine is distributed, it undergoes extensive testing. Before it is administered to the general public, the HPV vaccines were tested on hundreds and thousands of people. The vaccine showed some side effects on some people but the majority of them did not experience any kind of side effect. The HPV vaccination is free of mercury.

Who should not opt for this vaccine?

It is suggested that some people should either not take this vaccination or at least postpone the idea of going for this vaccine. These people include:

  • One who has already experienced a life-threatening response of HPV vaccination dosage, in life
  • One who is allergic to one of the components in the HPV vaccine, or has already experienced any kind of side effect of this vaccine
  • A woman who is pregnant
  • One who has some kind of sickness.
