This isn’t necessarily a bad thing: Peeking into another person’s account to see what they’re up to isn’t detrimental. As a matter of fact, you’ve probably stalked or had a hunch to stalk or lurk into someone’s account in order to steal their bits. It’s difficult to resist the impulse, and he admits to having succumbed to it at least once. Everyone has been stalked by friends, ex-friends, family members, and even celebrities. However, if you’re trying to stalk someone on Instagram, this may be more difficult. This is because it’s not just about gaining access to the account’s data, but also remaining undetected while doing so. In order to avoid being included in the Instagram story viewer, you cannot open a story or highlight. Accidental or unintentional use of the like or react buttons might potentially lead to your arrest. Then how do you use Instagram to spy on someone? Using the methods described here, you will be able to secretly monitor someone on Instagram without raising suspicion.
Firstly, know their name
I know I said I found a guy’s Instagram without his name, and I’ll get to how you can do that later, but with Instagram, it’s a lot easier if you know their name. It just saves a lot of time. Usually searching their name will bring up all the profiles under that name and from there you’ll need to go through each of them until you find who you’re looking for.
If their profile is public – your job is easy. You can lurk to your heart’s content, trawling all their content in the world. But be careful watching Instastories – they will be able to see if you watch their story. Even worse, Instagram ranks the viewers of your Instastory based on how recent and often someone is looking at your profile, with those who have looked at it most recently and most frequently up the top. So I would avoid watching the story altogether if you’re on your profile and don’t want them to know you’re lurking. However, be sure to check out one profile feature.

The tagged photos function
This feature is your best friend. A lot of people forget it exists. I know I did until a crush followed me on Instagram and I started freaking out about all the potentially embarrassing content they could find via my profile. My tagged photos – as in, the photos that other people have posted and tagged me in – were the second thing I thought about after the poor-quality selfie I posted when I was feeling particularly depressed one day, but I digress.
As soon as I realized how cringe-inducing some of my tagged photos were, I changed my profile settings so that any photo I’m tagged in isn’t displayed automatically. If I want it to appear, I’ll have to do it myself. So if you’re concerned about how your profile is perceived, take a look at your tagged photos and then adjust your settings if necessary.
But back to why it’s useful for lurking.
Well, I guess it’s obvious – you can see the photos that they haven’t personally selected. So the range of content you have access to pretty much doubles. It can provide info such as family connections, where they work, hang out, etc. And most importantly: if they have a partner.
If you are lurking their page directly and don’t know who their friends are or if they’re in a relationship, this is a really handy way of finding out. Especially if they’re the kind of person who only posts pictures of abstract city snaps or arty shit. Ain’t nobody got time for that when you’re trying to put together every aspect of a person’s life.
I feel so creepy writing this but I’m in too deep now so I may as well go on.
Find their friends
Now, the potential first road block you will come up against when lurking someone on Instagram is their profile being private. Even if you know their name, it’s not much help if their account is private. If it is private, and you don’t want to follow from your account because you’ve never actually met the person, there is a way. But it’s pretty extreme and I don’t like recommending it. So, instead, I will say you should exhaust all other options first. Such as lurking their friends.
Having a good idea of who your crush’s pals are can be really beneficial. It is possible to stalk your crush using a friend’s profile if your crush has a private profile but one of their friends has a public one. Friends can provide you a glimpse into someone’s life that isn’t as carefully manicured as their own social media profiles.
They will have images of their other buddies, so it’s not necessary to know all of their friends. Because of this, you may utilize the account of your primary buddy to spy on all of your crush’s pals, thereby gaining a greater understanding of them.
If you don’t know their name, but you know where they work
LinkedIn, baby. Search their place of employment, and if it’s a big, global company, put in the city you want. From there, all of the employees will come up. Obviously, this will only work if they have a LinkedIn, but these days, most people do. Don’t actually *look* at their profile – LinkedIn notifies people when someone looks at their profile. So this measure is to be used purely to find their name.
If they are a journalist or work in a profession where their work might be public, you can also look up their employer’s website and then just lurk the page for a list of employees. For instance, if they are a journalist, it’s super easy because by-lines often have pics these days. So you can go to the news site, and just trawl through articles published until you find one written by your crush. Voila!
Once you have their name, you can put that into Instagram, or even Twitter if they ARE a journo. The sad fact is that most journos or aspiring journos have Twitter. It is helpful though in that if you’re looking for flaws in your crush, you’ll probably find them on their Twitter account.
If their profile is private and you don’t know who their friends are
The best and most effective way of lurking someone is making a ‘finsta’. What is a ‘finsta’? A ‘fake Instagram’s. It will enable you to lurk on your crush without them knowing you are lurking on them. You can watch Instastories and go on their profile as much as you want without having to worry they have an app that allows them to see who is looking at their profile (yes, they exist).
How should you make this fake Instagram? Create an account with a fake name, add some photos, follow celebrities, gain some dummy followers, and then set the account to private so that no one can see who you follow or what you’re posting. From there, follow, watch and lurk away. This is how you can maybe follow your crush if they have a private account. Most people just like followers, so they will accept even if they don’t know the profile requesting the following. They might not accept, and if not, that is actually a good sign! They clearly take internet privacy and safety seriously.
And if you have reached the bottom of this article and are still reading, let me finish by saying I hope after reading all of this, you approach your own account with more caution. Make your profile private and be cautious about what personal info you are posting. You never know who might be lurking – seriously!
