You presumably use your AirPods frequently and wouldn’t want to lose them. Apple has enhanced the AirPod tracking tools in the Find My app so that you can locate misplaced earphones or headphones even when you’re not in Bluetooth range; here’s how to prevent this from happening again.

Different models of AirPods require slightly different procedures, but all of them have options. Once you’ve synced these gadgets with an iOS smartphone or Mac computer using iCloud, the Find My app will record their location (though you can disable this in the Find My app if you want).

An Explanation of How to Install the “Find My” Software

Launch Find My on your iOS device, or computer, and you’ll see your AirPods listed under the Devices tab; tap them to view their location on a map. If the AirPods are out of charge or otherwise unavailable, you can view their last known location. This identical spot is also available online, via iCloud.

When your AirPods aren’t showing up on the map, you can enable the Notify When Found toggle switch in the Notifications section to be notified when they reconnect. There’s no assurance they’ll turn up again, but at least you won’t have to check Find My every ten minutes to see if your missing device has reappeared.

A Directions button will appear on your first- and second-generation AirPods, respectively. It won’t be accurate, but it will get you to where your Bluetooth headphones were last detected. However, it’s the extent of the functionality for AirPods that predate the current model.

If you’re looking for the third-generation AirPods, the AirPods Pro, or the AirPods Max, you’ll also notice a Directions button. However, an Ultra Wideband (UWB) chip is built into these gadgets, allowing for more precise location tracking—so long as you also have an iPhone with UWB (so the iPhone 11 and later).

If your iPhone and AirPods support ultra-wideband (UWB), you’ll be able to use the Find button in the Find My app to locate your AirPods more. Find your missing gadgets by following the on-screen prompts (if you need to, you can switch between the left and the right AirPod).

Is There Any Way to Find Your Phone if You’ve Misplaced Your Air Pods?

Well, that’s great if you misplaced your AirPods in the immediate area, but what if you can’t find them? Like with AirTags, Apple (anonymously and securely) enlists the cooperation of every other iPhone in the world to track down the signals that your AirPods are sending out.

After choosing your AirPods in Find My, go to the tab containing their details and hit Activate next to Mark as Lost. When you tap Continue, you’ll be able to input an email address or mobile number that will appear on the screen of whoever discovers your AirPods; you’ll also receive a notification on your device, along with the reported location of your AirPods. In lost mode, your AirPods are uniquely associated with your Apple ID, preventing anybody else from using them.

The ability to use a mobile device to track down misplaced AirPods is a fantastic feature. It would be ideal if you wouldn’t misplace them again, though. Find I have a feature called “Notify When Left Behind” for just such an occasion. If your iPhone becomes disconnected from your AirPods, you will receive an alarm on your phone. Once again, AirTags might be used for this purpose.

With all of these safeguards in place, it ought to be fairly tough to misplace your AirPods again. If you’d rather not have your AirPods tracked in this way, you can disable the feature by tapping the Remove This Device button at the bottom of the AirPods entry in the Find My app.
