Although players can build highly realistic movie recreations, villages, and other things in the game “Minecraft,” this doesn’t actually apply to your default character skin. In truth, we believe that the default skins in Minecraft are deplorable, but how can you alter the appearance of your character without a built-in skin editor?
The good news is that switching skins in Minecraft is possible, albeit the procedure varies differently depending on the platform. In this tutorial, we’ll walk you through changing your skin in Minecraft for PC, console, and mobile devices.
Changing Skins in Minecraft PE
In many ways, “Minecraft” is all about customization. So you might be surprised when you launch the game and find that the cosmetics available to your protagonist are fairly limited.
But for the creatives who love the design and crafting aspects of “Minecraft,” don’t worry: In reality, your character’s cosmetic choices are virtually limitless. For “Java” users, you can find or create a skin, upload it, and enjoy it. And “Bedrock” users have that option and more through its character creator tool.
Here’s how you can get your “Minecraft” character’s skin in both “Bedrock Edition” and “Java Edition.”

How to Get a New Skin to Use in ‘Minecraft’?
Before you can change your skin, you’ll first need to have a new skin to change to.
The developers of “Minecraft” offer a few custom skins for free, usually created in honor of special events. You can also check out websites like The Skindex, which host user-created skins that you can download and use yourself.
Despite not offering the full Minecraft experience, Minecraft PE owners can get in on the custom skin fun too.
- On your mobile device, head to a third-party Minecraft skin website like Minecraft Skins.
- Click download on the page of the skin you’d like to apply to your character. In the latest versions of iOS and Android, the download of the image file should begin automatically.
- Open Minecraft PE and tap the coat hanger icon in the lower-right of the display.
- Tap the blank skin icon in the top-left of the display.
- Tap Choose New Skin and select the file you downloaded earlier.
- Select the appropriate skin model (tap the one on the right if you’re unsure) and tap Confirm to apply your changes.
The selected skin should now be selected as your character’s default!
‘Bedrock Edition’s’ Special Skin options
In-game skin creation is available in the “Bedrock” edition of the game, in addition to purchased skins created by Mojang and collaborators.
The “Edit Character” option, which we’ll explain how to access in the lengthy “Bedrock” section below, contains the in-game skin creator. Your skin can be fully customized in terms of color and design, and you can change each individual body part.
There are some skin options in this menu that must first be unlocked, either by obtaining accomplishments or purchasing them. Skins can be purchased with real money or Minecoins, which can also be bought with real money.
A number of these premium skins are listed in the character creator, but you can find all of them by going back to the main menu and clicking “Marketplace.” There’s also an online store you can get to through your web browser.
