The new augmented reality game from Google and Taito lets you move your phone around to kill AR Space Invaders aliens. The game is now available on Android and iOS. Space Invaders: World Defense is a game that was announced by two companies at Google I/O in May.
The game is coming out when many other augmented reality games aren’t doing so well. Niantic’s Pokémon Go has been a huge hit, but the studio has shut down games from big brands like Harry Potter, Transformers, and the NBA and fired workers. And it’s not just Niantic that’s had trouble. Microsoft shut down a Minecraft AR game in 2021, and CD Projekt Red just shut down its The Witcher AR game.
I’m not sure if World Defense will become as popular as Pokémon Go, but the idea that you can shoot a fake alien by pointing your phone at the real world seems like it could be fun. The game seems like it could be a good way to show off Google’s ARCore technology, which helps power the game. You can also take a silly augmented reality picture in a Space Invaders costume, so there’s that.

But we’ll have to wait and see if Space Invaders: World Defense has enough to keep people excited after the game’s newness wears off. You can get the game on both Google Play and the App Store if you want to try it out.
