A surprise cameo in episode six
Episode six opens with the show’s now‑familiar prologue about the supernatural and psychic abilities. Midway through that sequence a mysterious seer appears whose voice and mannerisms ring a bell — it’s Mark Hamill. The Star Wars star turns up briefly as a clairvoyant figure, a cameo that arrives courtesy of director Mike Flanagan, who previously coaxed Hamill back into TV work with The Fall of the House of Usher. Flanagan told ScreenRant the actor was “very excited to come and do a scene.”
He wanted to vanish into character — literally
Hamill has explained that he asked to be made almost unrecognizable for the part. He recalled insisting on heavy makeup and even a false nose to obscure his features, wanting to play the part as a mystic with no obvious celebrity fingerprints. On top of the physical disguise, Hamill hoped not to be listed in the episode’s credits so that viewers might be fooled — perhaps someone would think, “That sounds like him,” but never be sure. That plan worked up to a point: the production initially kept his involvement under wraps (it was treated as a spoiler), and many viewers did not spot him during the scene. The ruse, however, ended once the episode’s credits rolled, revealing “Guest Starring: Mark Hamill.”
Why revisit a De Palma classic? Hamill’s perspective
Both Hamill and Flanagan admitted they questioned the wisdom of remaking a Brian De Palma classic at first. Hamill said he wondered why the director would tackle such a revered film. What convinced him, though, was the format: a multi‑episode series gives the creators room to expand the narrative, delving into backstories and the lives of the school friends in ways a single movie cannot. In his view, the eight‑hour canvas allowed the story to grow and offer fresh angles on the familiar material.
