The Future of PlayStation: Insights from Sony’s Business Segment Meeting
During the recent Sony Group Business Segment Meeting—an event dedicated to investors—key figures from the company’s gaming division revealed exciting data and strategic plans. Hideaki Nishino and Hermen Hulst, soon-to-be co-CEOs of PlayStation starting June 1, shared the stage to discuss the current state and ambitious future of PlayStation.
From the meeting, we learned that of PlayStation’s 97 million monthly active users, half are still using the PS4, while the other half have transitioned to the PS5. Despite this split, the PS5 users are not only more active, logging 65% of total gaming time, but also spend more on average than their PS4 counterparts. This generation is proving to be the most profitable yet, with earnings rising from $9 billion during the PS4 era to $10 billion with the PS5, even though overall sales dipped slightly from $107 billion to $106 billion.
Looking forward, Nishino aims to expand the installed base and ensure steady revenue through “content, services, and peripherals.” On the other hand, Hulst is focused on broadening the reach of Sony’s IPs, ensuring a robust release schedule, and continuing the game-as-a-service roadmap initiated by Jim Ryan.

PlayStation’s PC and Transmedia Strategies
In response to investor queries, Hulst elaborated on PlayStation’s evolving approach to the PC market, which has become an increasingly important part of their business following the success of titles like Helldivers 2. The strategy moving forward involves launching PlayStation Studios’ service games simultaneously on console and PC. However, the major single-player, story-driven games—the tentpoles that have built Sony’s reputation—will remain console exclusives for the necessary duration. The ultimate goal is to attract new users to the PlayStation platforms through these transmedia experiences.

Gaming Showdown: State of Play vs. Marvelous Game Showcase
In other exciting news, Sony announced a new State of Play broadcast set for tonight at midnight. The 30-minute showcase will cover 14 upcoming games for the PS5 and PSVR2. This event coincides with the Marvelous Game Showcase 2024, also airing tonight. It’s a rare occurrence, like a meteor shower in the gaming world, where audiences can flip between two major showcases, each offering a glimpse into future gaming landscapes.
