Are you planning a trip to Dubrovnik, Croatia? If so, you might find yourself standing on the now-infamous Jesuit Stairs, better known to many as the “Walk of Shame” stairs from Game of Thrones. But it’s not just the filming location that’s stirring conversations. Lena Headey, who played Cersei Lannister, has recently opened up about the backlash she faced for using a body double during the notorious scene.

The Shock of Discontent

In an interview with The Telegraph, Lena Headey expressed her astonishment at the anger directed towards her when it was revealed she used a body double for the scene. “I was really surprised by the anger, the idea that I had somehow cheated the audience,” she said. Headey described how the overwhelming presence of the crowd and her celebrity status at the time made it impossible for her to perform the emotionally taxing scene. “Acting is a joy, but it demands a lot from you. I wouldn’t have been able to deliver the emotional part of the job; I would have been completely defensive,” she explained.

Confronting Hollywood’s Dark Side

The conversation with Headey didn’t stop at Game of Thrones. She shed light on her uncomfortable experiences with Harvey Weinstein, who years earlier had made inappropriate advances towards her. Headey recounted how Weinstein invited her to his hotel room under the pretense of showing her a script, after having made suggestive comments at the Venice Film Festival. She was one of the brave voices that contributed to the mogul’s downfall.

A Changing Industry

Lena Headey also reflected on the broader implications of her experiences in Hollywood, particularly how they relate to the #MeToo movement. She spoke about the strange protection that predatory men in the industry receive due to their disproportionate power, and the vulnerable position of actresses who need to work to sustain themselves. “One job can be completely ruined by one person who, for some reason, is allowed to get away with it,” she lamented. Fortunately, Headey notes a significant shift in the industry since the rise of #MeToo. “I think the majority of young girls I speak to now in this industry are very savvy. The attitude now is: ‘No way I’m going to do that.’” This marks a hopeful progression towards a safer environment in Hollywood, with fewer figures like Weinstein in power.
